Travel insurance for a Schengen visa
A Schengen visa file is not complete without a travel insurance certificate, and a certificate that is a day short or names the wrong countries can sink it. Here is what is checked, and how to get it right the first time.

What the rules require
The EU Visa Code (Regulation 810/2009, article 15) sets the same rule for every Schengen consulate:
- The insurance covers repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care, emergency hospital treatment and death.
- It is valid in every Schengen country, and for the whole stay.
- The minimum cover is 30,000 euros.
- For a multiple-entry visa, the first trip must be covered, and you sign a statement on the form that you will be insured for the following ones. A yearly contract avoids the question.
Check the certificate before you hand it in
- Your name and passport number exactly as in the passport.
- The dates: from the day you enter the Schengen area to the day you leave. A day of margin at each end costs little.
- The zone: "Schengen" or "Europe" including every Schengen country, and any country you cross.
- The amount: at least 30,000 euros. Some Moroccan certificates show it in dirhams.
- The emergency assistance number, the contract number and the company's name.
- For a family, every traveller named.
Who sells it in Morocco
Moroccan assistance companies sell travel contracts with a certificate for the visa file:
- Maroc Assistance Internationale, of the Banque Populaire group: Schengen Visa.
- Africa First Assist: Isaaf Visa Europe.
- RMA Assistance: RMASSIST'Voyage Europe, from 487 MAD a year.
- Wafa IMA Assistance: travel assistance contracts.
- Cover Edge: Europe or World zone, for 6 months or 1 to 5 years.
Assurlik is not linked to any of them. Compare the price, the cover and the refund terms before you buy.

If the visa is refused
- Ask before you buy whether the premium is refunded on proof of the refusal, and on what conditions.
- If you change your dates, ask the company for a new certificate before you hand in the file again.
- Once you travel, keep the emergency number with your passport, and call it before you pay any hospital.
Questions
Is AMO enough for the visa?
No. Abroad, AMO pays only for unforeseen emergencies, on the basis of Moroccan tariffs, and gives no certificate that consulates accept. You need a travel assistance contract.
Do children need their own certificate?
Every traveller must be covered and named. A family contract lists everyone on one certificate.
Do the same rules apply to a visa for the United Kingdom or the United States?
No. These are Schengen rules. Other countries set their own: read the consulate's list before you buy.
